The Teltonika RUT956 is an industrial 4G LTE router built for sites where connectivity is only half the job — it also has to talk to the equipment already there. Alongside dual-SIM cellular, Wi-Fi and four Ethernet ports, it carries RS232 and RS485 serial interfaces, a GNSS receiver and configurable inputs and outputs, which makes it the router of choice when a deployment involves legacy serial kit, remote I/O or vehicle tracking.
It is the direct successor to the long-running RUT955 and shares its role: the do-everything unit that connects and integrates in one box. One deliberate difference — the RUT956 has no microSD slot, so if you are replacing a RUT955 that used local storage, plan around it.

Serial integration — the reason to choose the 956
Both serial ports are fully featured: RS232 on a DB9 socket and RS485 on a 6-pin industrial socket, running full or half duplex from 300 to 115200 baud. RutOS presents them as console, serial-over-IP, modem, Modbus gateway or NTRIP client, so a serial PLC, meter or controller becomes reachable over the network without a separate protocol converter in the cabinet.
RutOS and remote management
The RUT956 runs RutOS, Teltonika’s OpenWrt-based operating system, with Modbus TCP and RTU, DNP3, DLMS/COSEM, OPC UA, BACnet, MQTT, SNMP and TR-069 alongside a full VPN suite including OpenVPN, IPsec and WireGuard. It is compatible with Teltonika RMS for remote monitoring, configuration and firmware updates across a fleet — which is what keeps engineer callouts down once the units are in the field.
Recommended antennas
The RUT956 uses 2 × SMA for cellular, 2 × RP-SMA for Wi-Fi and 1 × SMA for GNSS — worth checking, because RP-SMA and SMA are not interchangeable. For most Irish installations we pair it with:
