What Is River Level Monitoring?

River level monitoring measures the height of water in a river, stream, tank or channel continuously and reports it remotely, replacing manual gauge readings and site visits. A battery-powered level sensor — mounted on a bridge, bank structure or buoy above the water — measures the distance to the surface, logs it, and transmits readings over LoRaWAN, cellular or satellite to a monitoring platform that charts trends and raises alerts when levels rise toward flood thresholds or fall toward abstraction limits. Because the sensors are autonomous, they suit exactly the places flooding happens: remote, unpowered, and awkward to visit.

The same measurement solves groundwater and borehole monitoring — a sensor down a stilling tube instead of over a river.

Does it need power or infrastructure at the river?

No — the sensors are battery powered and autonomous, designed for multi-year operation without mains power. That’s what makes remote and flood-prone locations practical: nothing to build except the mounting point, and with buoy-mounted sensing, potentially not even that.

What if the site has no mobile coverage?

LoRaWAN covers sites within reach of a gateway; cellular covers most of Ireland; and for locations beyond both, a satellite-connected sensor variant is on the roadmap — designed for the genuinely remote schemes where no terrestrial network reaches.

Can it alert us when levels rise?

Yes — thresholds are set per site, and the platform alerts when a level crosses them or trends toward them, so a rising river is flagged while there’s still time to act rather than confirmed after the fact.

Is this available today or coming?

Both. Rochester’s current sensor range monitors tanks, groundwater and enclosed levels today — our live deployments include stadium capture tanks and industrial groundwater.
