Asset tracking — common questions.
What’s the difference between a battery-powered and hardwired tracker?
Battery-powered trackers (AS32, AS33, AS35, AS83-8, AN98C) install in seconds and run for years on internal cells — best for trailers, plant, containers and any unpowered asset. Hardwired trackers (AT10, AT70, AT12S, AD21) connect to a vehicle’s 12V/24V supply (or OBD-II port in the AD21’s case) and provide continuous tracking with ignition sensing, starter inhibit and driver behaviour I/O — best for fleet management and vehicle financing.
What does “pre-configured” actually mean? What gets set in Galway?
Pre-configuration covers ~25 parameters across six domains: location & reporting (frequency, trip logic, GNSS constellation), on-device geo-fencing (multiple zones, entry/exit alerts, curfew), power management (hibernate threshold, motion-wake sensitivity, scheduled wake), events & alerts (ignition, starter inhibit, towing, tamper, harsh driving), communications (APN, SMS fallback endpoint, acknowledged-mode), and firmware (OTA channels, custom event triggers, bespoke reporting protocols). All set at the ATEL factory against your project specification before the trackers leave us.
How does “smart trip detection” work?
The tracker decides what counts as “a trip” using configurable parameters — motion thresholds, acceleration triggers, start/end timeouts and ignition state (on wired models). For example: a vehicle tracker might wait for ignition-on + 30 seconds of motion to mark trip-start, then trip-end after ignition-off + 5 minutes of stillness. For battery trackers: motion start sensitivity, motion end timeout and acceleration thresholds drive the logic. Every parameter is configurable per project — what counts as a trip for a truck is very different from a trailer or a container.
Do I have to use the A·TRACS cloud platform?
No. Every A·TRACS device can report directly to your own server via TCP, UDP, MQTT or REST. The A·TRACS cloud is offered as a managed option for projects that want device management and dashboards out of the box, but the hardware doesn’t require it. Many TITAN customers start on A·TRACS and graduate to direct integration once their own platform is ready.
What is IoT Factory and when should I use it?
IoT Factory is a Belgian-developed IoT platform partner that TITAN works with for projects needing richer dashboards, multi-tenant SaaS or end-customer portals. It can ingest data from ATEL trackers via REST API alongside data from third-party sensors and most LPWAN devices — useful when you want a single visualisation layer across multiple device types. Use ATEL’s native A·TRACS for ATEL-only deployments, your own backend for full custom integration, and IoT Factory when you need a richer dashboard layer or a multi-device platform.
How long do the long-life batteries actually last?
The non-rechargeable variants quote 5 to 8+ years at one report per day, depending on the model. The AS32-NC delivers 8+ years on a 7,500 mAh cell, and the AS35 delivers 7+ years on a 15,000 mAh cell. Real-world life depends on report frequency, signal strength, and time spent in hibernation vs motion. TITAN can model expected life against your specific reporting profile.
Can A·TRACS data feed into our existing ERP, TMS or fleet system?
Yes. A·TRACS publishes a REST API delivering device telemetry, event data and management calls in JSON. TITAN handles the integration work — feeding A·TRACS data into your ERP, TMS, fleet platform or custom dashboard. Alternatively, devices can be configured to report direct to your server, bypassing A·TRACS storage entirely.
Do the SD-D01 and SD-D05 sensors work standalone?
No — the SD-series sensors are BLE 5.x only. They pair with a nearby ATEL tracker (AS33, AT70, etc.) which acts as the cellular gateway and uplinks sensor data. This means you buy them as part of a solution: an AS33 tracker paired with an SD-D05 for cold-chain monitoring, or an AT70 paired with an SD-D01 for trailer door integrity. The trackers and sensors share the same protocol and management platform.
Do you offer GNSS in a cellular router for integrated projects?
Yes — the Robustel R5030 industrial cellular router includes built-in GNSS. For fixed assets that need both connectivity AND location reporting in a single industrial-grade DIN-rail box (e.g. kiosks, digital signage, fixed plant, remote sites), the R5030 gives you one device performing two functions. Free RCMS cloud management included. Useful when a separate tracker would be overkill or impractical.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
ATEL trackers are configured at the factory to project specification, so we work on a project-by-project basis.
